अध्याय १२
अर्जुन उवाच
एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते।
ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः॥१

अर्जुन ने कहा — आपके पूर्वोक्त उपदेशानुसार जो भक्तयोगी निष्ठायुक्त होकर निरन्तर आपके श्यामसुन्दर रूप की उपासना करते हैं तथा जो निर्विशेष अक्षर ब्रह्म की उपासना करते हैं, उन दोनों में कौन श्रेष्ठ योगवेत्ता हैं?॥१॥
Arjun inquired—According to your earlier explanation: who do You consider to be more perfect in Yoga, those who are steadfastly, continually engage in the worship of Your Syamsundara form, or those who worship the formless Brahman?
अन्वय-अर्जुनः उवाच (अर्जुनने कहा!) एवम् (इस प्रकारसे) सततयुक्ताः (निरन्तर आपमें निष्ठायुक्त) ये भक्ताः (जो भक्तगण) त्वाम् (आपकी) पर्युपासते (उपासना करते हैं) ये च अपि (और जो) अव्यक्तम् (निर्विशेष) अक्षरम् (ब्रह्मकी) [पर्युपासते-उपासना करते हैं] तेषाम् (उन दोनोंमें) के योगवित्तमाः (कौन श्रेष्ठ योगवेत्ता हैं)।।१।।
श्रीभगवानुवाच
मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते।
श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः॥२

The blessed Lord Said: He whose mind is fixed on My personal form, always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith is considered by Me to be most perfect.
सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम्॥३

ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः॥४

But those who worship My indescribable, unmanifest, all-pervading, inconceivable, immutable, eternal, and featureless impersonal conception, while controlling their senses, maintaining equal vision in all situations, and engaging in activities for the welfare of all beings, also attain Me alone.
ये – जो तु – लेकिन अक्षरम् – इन्द्रिय अनुभूति से परे अनिर्देश्यम् – अनिश्चित अव्यक्तम् – अप्रकट पर्युपासते – पूजा करने में पूर्णतया संलग्न सर्वत्र-गम् – सर्वव्यापी अचिन्त्यम् – अकल्पनीय च – भी कूटस्थम् – अपरिवर्तित अचलम् – स्थिर ध्रुवम् – निश्चित सन्नियम्य – वश में करके इन्द्रिय-ग्रामम् – सारी इन्द्रियों को सर्वत्र – सभी स्थानों में सम-बुद्धयः – समदर्शी ते – वे प्राप्नुवन्ति – प्राप्त करते हैं माम् – मुझको एव – निश्चय ही सर्व-भूत-हिते – समस्त जीवों के कल्याण में रताः – संलग्न॥३-४॥
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते॥५

जिन लोगों के मन परमेश्वर के अव्यक्त, निराकार धारणा के प्रति आसक्त हैं, उनके लिए प्रगति कर पाना अत्यन्त कष्टप्रद है क्योंकि देहधारियों के लिए अव्यक्त की अनुभूति अत्यन्त दुःख पूर्वक प्राप्त होती है॥५॥
For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Supreme, advancement is very troublesome, for worship of the unmanifest is exceedingly difficult for embodied beings.
क्लेश: – कष्ट अधिकतर: – अत्यधिक तेषाम् – उन अव्यक्त – अव्यक्त के प्रति आसक्त – अनुरक्त चेतसाम् – मन वालों का अव्यक्ता – अव्यक्त की ओर हि – निश्चय ही गति: – प्रगति दुःखम् – दुःख के साथ देहवद्भिः – देहधारी के द्वारा अवाप्यते – प्राप्त किया जाता है॥५॥
अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते॥६

भवामि न चिरात् पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम्॥७

But to those who dedicate all their actions unto Me, being devoted to Me and exclusively worship Me with unalloyed devotion, O Paratha, I award swift deliverance from the ocean of birth and death.

निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः॥८

Fix your mind on my Syamsundara form alone and surrender your intellect to Me. There upon, you will always live in Me. Of this, there is no doubt.

अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्तुं धनञ्जय॥९

If you are unable to fix your mind steadily on Me, O Dhananjay, then develop an eagerness to attain Me by practice of bhakti-yoga.

मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन् सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि॥१०

If you cannot practice the regulations of bhakti-yoga, then just try to work for Me, because by working for Me you will certainly attain perfection.

सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान्॥११

If, however, you are unable to work for me in devotion, then by offering to Me, renounce the fruits of your actions and be situated in the self.

ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम्॥१२

Better than mechanical practice is knowledge; better than knowledge is My remembrance and meditation upon Me. Such meditation leads to renunciation of the fruits of actions, for peace immediately follows such renunciation.

निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी॥१३

मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः॥१४

My devoted, who is non-envious, compassionate and friendly toward all living beings, free from possessiveness and false ego, equipoised to happiness and distress, forgiving, always satisfied, self-controlled, firm in conviction, and dedicated to Me in mind and intellect, engaged in devotional service—is very dear to Me.

हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः॥१५

He who neither disturbs anyone nor is himself disturbed by others, and who is free from mundane pleasure, pain, fear and anxiety, is certainly dear to Me

सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः॥१६

A devotee who is not dependent on the ordinary course of activities, who is pure, expert, detached, free from all pains, and free from all endeavors that are unfavorable to bhakti, is very dear to Me.

शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान् यः स मे प्रियः॥१७

जो न हर्षित होता है, न द्वेष करता है, न शोक करता है, न आकांक्षा करता है, जो पाप तथा पुण्य-दोनों का परित्याग करने वाला है और जो मेरे प्रति भक्तिमान है, वह मुझे अत्यन्त प्रिय है॥१७॥
One who neither delights nor hates, neither laments nor desires, who renounces both pious and impious activities, and is full of devotion to Me is indeed very dear to Me.

शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः॥१८

अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान् मे प्रियो नरः॥१९

One who is equal to friends and enemies, equipoised in honor and dishonor, heat and cold, joy and anguish, fame, and infamy, free from adverse association, always silent and satisfied with anything, detached to the place of residence, fixed in knowledge and engaged in My devotional service, is very dear to Me.

श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः॥२०

Those, who follows this nectarian path of devotional service as described herein, and completely engage themself with faith, making Me the supreme goal, are exceedingly dear to Me .
